During the summer months, Yosemite National Park is a favorite Mammoth Lakes side trip on your Summer vacation, as it is only an hour drive to the eastern entrance to this outdoor recreation area from one of our many Mammoth condo rentals
. Yosemite is world famous for its waterfalls, cliffs and rock formations, and the abundant hiking trails and camping amidst truly majestic scenery.
Tuolomne Meadows is home to the wild and scenic Tuolomne River, which winds it way through the alpine meadows surrounded by granite domes and mountain peaks. Tuolomne Meadows is the starting point for numerous hikes, lakes and access to various camping locations such as Cathedral Lakes, Elizabeth Lakes, Dog Lake, Lembert Dome and through Lyell Canyon along the Tuolomne River.
Yosemite Valley, in the interior of Yosemite, is the home to massive cliffs like Half Dome and El Capitan, standing 3,593 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley. Beautiful meadows abound, below mind-bending waterfalls including Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, Bridal Falls, and Yosemite Falls - the tallest waterfall in North America. Favorite day hikes in this area include Bridalveil Falls (.5 miles round trip), Lower Yosemite Falls (1.0 miles round trip), Upper Yosemite Falls Trail to Columbia Rock (2 miles round trip), Top of Yosemite Falls (7.2 miles round trip), Mirror Lake (2 miles round trip), Top of Vernal Falls (3 miles round trip), Top of Nevada Falls (5 miles round trip), and our personal favorite, the Panorama Trail from Glacier Point to Yosemite Valley (8.5 miles one way), true to its namesake, offering panoramic views of the valley and several waterfalls, and through the also aptly named Mist Trail (be prepared to get soaked!).
When to go: Mammoth Lakes - Yosemite
Yosemite Valley is open year-round, however the Tioga Pass is closed in the Winter, so travel here from your Mammoth condo is not possible in the Winter. During the summer months, the best time is either early in the Spring, when the spring runoff from the mountains creates an avalanche of water from the many waterfalls, or during the fall, when the splendid colors begin to change before Winter takes hold.
Many visitors to Mammoth Lakes opt to rent one of our great Mammoth condos for a week in the summer, and take a day or two to make the quick drive to Yosemite in the middle of their trip.
What to do in Yosemite
Yosemite offers an endless array of outdoor activities to complement your Mammoth vacation, including swimming, rafting, fishing, hiking, rock climbing and camping. Download the Summer Yosemite Guide or visit the Yosemite National Park website.
How to get there
You can reach Yosemite from your Mammoth condo rental in the Summer by taking Highway 203 South a few miles to 395 North to Lee Vining, and then North on Tioga Pass/Highway 120 West into the park.
